Shear generosity: Teens have their heads shaved for a good cause in Grayslake
The Grayslake Middle School gymnasium was packed Thursday as students and staff members cheered on teens who volunteered to have their heads shaved for a good cause.
The sixth annual Cut & Shave fundraiser for the St. Baldrick's Foundation featured six stylists from area salons who volunteered their time to shave the heads of 25 students during the in-school assembly.
The hair of students with at least 8 inches to donate was sent to Children with Hair Loss, which makes wigs for childhood cancer victims.
“It's a good way to see how they (students) can give back to a bigger purpose in a very easy fun way,” said Grayslake Middle School teacher Amy Corey, who helped organize the event.
To date, Grayslake Middle School has raised close to $115,000 through its St. Baldrick's events.
“We hope to reach $130,000 this year,” Principal Marcus Smith said.
The school also held a raffle to help raise funds in the fight against childhood cancers.
