Aurora Methodists support young readers

Congregants at Flowing Forth United Methodist Church in Aurora are sponsoring books for students at Schneider Elementary School in North Aurora.

At a worship service Aug. 25, church member Mona Middleton of Montgomery announced a drive to collect $8 donations to supply books monthly to 25 Schneider students.

Middleton said she's collecting contributions in response to an appeal from Ruby Halverson, a second-grade teacher.

Halverson said in an email, "Each month I receive Scholastic Book Club fliers to send home with students to purchase books. Some families cannot afford books. Reading is so important. I want to foster the love of reading with my students.

"Scholastic has books that are $1. How cool would it be for each of my 25 students to receive one new book from October through May?"

Halverson said book sponsors can send cash or checks made out to Scholastic Book Club to her at Schneider Elementary School, 304 Banbury Road, North Aurora. Call (630) 801-6419 for more information.
