Glenbard Parent Series features documentary on teen stress

Dealing with stress and anxiety will be the topic when Glenbard Parent Series Navigating Healthy Families meets later this month at Glenbard West High School.

The group will premiere the documentary "Next Chapter: Flipping the Script on Stress, Anxiety and Depression" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, at the school, 670 Crescent Blvd., Glen Ellyn.

The film's director, Dr. Delaney Ruston, will lead a discussion after the screening.

As in her previous film, "Screenagers," Ruston uses a personal and professional eye to examine a new approach to help young people.

The film follows Ruston as she finds herself at a loss for how to help her own teens as they struggle with their emotional well-being. What skills will help them manage challenges now and in the future? In what ways is screen time contributing to their ups and downs?

This documentary features cutting-edge science and insights from researchers, psychologists and thought-leaders to reveal evidence-based strategies that support youth mental wellness.

Experts featured in the film include former GPS presenters Dr. Dan Siegel, director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center at UCLA; Laura Kastner, psychologist and author of "Wise-Minded Parenting"; and Ned Johnson, co-author of "The Self-Driven Child."

Parents, caregivers and students ages 10 and older are encouraged to attend the film and join the discussion about Ruston's surprising solutions.

Continuing professional development units are available.

The Glenbard Parent Series is sponsored by the Birth to Five Community Coalition, Cebrin Goodman Center, Cooperative Association for Special Education (CASE), College of DuPage, DuPage Medical Group, Emmy Gaffey Foundation, Glenbard Early Childhood Collaborative, Holiday Inn/Carol Stream, the Prevention Leadership Team of the DuPage County Health Department, and the District 93 Birth to Five Community Coalition.
