Marklund to host 7th annual Run, Walk, and Roll-Geneva Oct. 20
Adults with severe and profound developmental disabilities will take to the racecourse this fall to join others in raising money for Marklund, the nonprofit organization that cares for them around the clock.
The seventh annual Run, Walk and Roll-Geneva 5K/1-Mile Event will take place Sunday, Oct. 20, at the Marklund Hyde Center.
"The Run, Walk & Roll has grown into an experience that leaves everybody feeling connected to Marklund and our mission to make everyday life possible for individuals with disabilities," said Natalie Sarby, community events manager at Marklund. "To see the faces of our residents as they participate alongside their family, friends, and community members is priceless."
It is open to runners and walkers of all abilities, including those in wheelchairs and walkers, to raise awareness and support for Marklund's programs and services.
In addition to the 5K race, there is also the option for a one-mile walk/run, in which many of the Marklund residents take part.
Registration for the 5K is $50 with a hoodie, and registration for the one mile is $40 with a hoodie. Hoodies are guaranteed to all participants registered by Oct. 7. After Oct. 7, hoodie requests and sizes will be subject to available inventory. Prices will increase after Oct. 1.
The Marklund Hyde Center in Geneva is home to 96 adults with severe and profound developmental disabilities. Many of those residents will be on the course on the day of the race. In addition to individual registration, registrants can build a team and personal fundraising page. At Marklund, many of those teams are composed of the friends and family of Marklund residents.
Participants of the Run, Walk, and Roll are not just supporting Marklund residents; they're running and walking right beside them and their families.
"Teams consist of Marklund family and friends, local businesses and organizations, community groups, schools, and just your everyday 5K runners," said Sarby. "Teams are a great way to personalize your event experience with your family, friends and/or colleagues. Lots of our teams pick a fun name, make some team shirts or signs, and come out together on the big day to enjoy themselves and show their support for Marklund."
There are also a variety of fun options for volunteers on race day, from manning the water station and assisting with food to helping with race day registration, working as a parking guide, and handing out finisher awards.
By becoming a part of the Run, Walk & Roll Volunteer Race Crew, individuals receive a complimentary shirt, food, and coffee.
Sarby says that many volunteers and volunteer groups have returned to volunteer year after year.
"Volunteering is an amazing experience in itself. There are so many fun opportunities to help out and feel a part of the race," Sarby said. "A popular volunteer option is the 'Course Volunteer' where volunteers line the racecourse to cheer on the participants as they run, walk, and roll by."
The race will start and end in front of the Marklund Hyde Center at 1S450 Wyatt Drive. It will wind through the South Mill Creek neighborhood.
The course is USA Track & Field Certified with 5K chip timing.
Awards will go to the top three overall finishers, along with the top two male and female in each age division.
Established in 2013, it receives enormous support from local businesses, neighbors, and friends. Since its inception, the Run, Walk, and Roll series has raised over $420,000 in net proceeds. This fundraising event is also a perfect opportunity for businesses to gain exposure in the community and make a difference in the lives of individuals with profound disabilities, with sponsorship opportunities ranging from $100 to $7,500 as well as in-kind donations.
After the race, there will be a "Party in the Park" featuring food, live music, event gear giveaways, prizes, mini therapy horses, and more.
Individuals that raise over $250 are guaranteed a prize, while individuals that raise $100 or more are entered in to win the grand prize.
