Boys golf: Bailes ties for 9th, leads Carmel to fourth at state

Clint Bailes shot a 6-over 77, giving him a two-day total of 6-over 148 to tie for ninth place, and Carmel Catholic's boys golf team finished fourth in the Class 2A state tournament at Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University in Normal on Saturday.

Peoria Notre Dame won the state championship with a plus-39 total of 607 over the two days. Quincy Notre Dame (plus 46) and Rockford Boylan Catholic (plus 48) were second and third, followed by Carmel (plus 52).

The Corsairs also counted the two-day rounds of senior Michael Wattelet (plus 16, tie for 40th), senior Justin McKenna (plus 18, 45th) and junior Alex Streit (plus 21, tie for 48th). Streit shot a 79 on Saturday. Carmel junior Ryan Hogan (17 over Saturday) also finishes plus 21 for the tournament (tie for 48th).

Bailes, a junior, carded an even-par round of 71 on Friday. His Saturday round included 4 bogeys and 1 double-bogey.

Boylan senior TJ Baker won the championship with an 8-under 134, 1 shot better than Quincy Notre Dame junior Alex McCulla. Baker followed up his opening-round 66 with a 68.

In Class 3A, at The Den at Fox Creek in Bloomington, Lake Forest won the state championship with a plus-25 total of 601. Glenbrook North (plus 33) and New Trier (plus 35) finished second and third.

Lockport junior Ben Sluzas shot a winning 4-under 140 over the two days. Lake Forest senior Patrick Moorhead finished second, 1 shot back. Lake Forest junior Flynn Bradley and sophomore Jack Marshall both finished plus 10, and Scouts junior Charlie Haggerty was plus 11. Lake Forest juniors Pierce Grieve and Colin Jasper were plus 12 and plus 13, respectively.

Mundelein senior Colin Wade (plus 10) tied for 20th with a group that included Bradley and Marshall.
