Paramount's 10th season to include 'Cinderella,' 'Ragtime,' 'Groundhog Day'
A retro jukebox tuner, a fairy tale classic, a regional premiere and a revival of a richly textured portrait of a not-so-long-gone era make up Paramount Theatre's 10th anniversary Broadway series, which artistic director Jim Corti described in a prepared release as a "kaleidoscopic panorama of 20th-century musical genres."
The season begins with the jukebox show "Rock of Ages" (Sept. 2-Oct. 18), which uses 1980s rock anthems to tell the story of a small-town girl with Hollywood dreams and an aspiring musician with rock star fantasies.
That's followed by "Cinderella" (Nov. 11-Jan. 17, 2021), the family-friendly musical classic by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II about a sweet young girl forced into servitude by her wicked stepmother, who - with help from her fairy godmother - catches the heart of a prince.
Paramount begins 2021 with the regional premiere of "Groundhog Day" (Feb. 10-March 28, 2021), the musical based on the 1993 film comedy about a TV weather forecaster stuck in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, who finds himself reliving the same day.
The season concludes with a revival of "Ragtime" (April 28-June 13, 2021), Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty's sprawling musical offering a portrait of the nation at the turn of the 20th century through the eyes of African Americans, European immigrants and Caucasians.
