$500K bail for Crystal Lake man charged with shooting man 2x in marijuana deal

A 22-year-old Crystal Lake man has been arrested and charged with shooting a man twice during a marijuana deal turned robbery this week in Rutland Township.

Kyle A. Campbell, of the 100 block of Surrey Lane, faces charges of attempted murder, armed robbery/discharge a firearm causing great bodily harm, and aggravated battery with a firearm, according to the Kane County Sheriff's Office.

Campbell was arrested about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday near Interstate 90 and Randall Road in Elgin with help from the U.S. Marshal's Great Lakes Task Force, the sheriff's office said.

Kane County deputies began investigating after they were sent to a Huntley-area hospital at 6 p.m. Monday for a 22-year-old man who was being treated for gunshot wounds.

Investigators learned the victim and another person went to a house on the 40W600 block of Powers Road in Rutland Township to buy just under $200 of marijuana.

The victim met with Campbell, who took the money and told the victim to leave without selling the marijuana. The two fought, with Campbell shooting the victim twice in the "lower extremities," according to the sheriff's office.

Authorities obtained an arrest warrant for Campbell and found him two days later.

Campbell's next court date was not immediately available Thursday. He is held at the Kane County jail on $500,000 bail, meaning he must post $50,000 to be released while the case is pending.

Campbell could face a minimum of 26 years in prison if convicted of all the charges. Attempted murder is a felony that carries a prison sentence of six to 30 years with no chance of probation, and Campbell could be subject to an additional 20-year prison term if a judge or jury finds he personally discharged the gun during the crime.
