Aurora man's source of bail money questioned

Kane County prosecutors want an Aurora man being held on a November 2019 weapons offense to show that funds toward his $150,000 bail are from legal sources.

Terrance Boyd, 27, of the 500 block of Spring Street, briefly appeared in court Thursday, where prosecutors filed the motion requiring the financial proof. "The defendant's and/or unemployment are inconsistent with the financial ability necessary (to post bond)," read part of the motion.

Prosecutors' interest in Boyd's finances surfaced after several recent arrests.

He was charged with one count of armed habitual criminal and other felony weapons offenses after Aurora police said he ran from a Jan. 14 traffic stop while in possession of a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun, according to authorities and Kane County court records.

Boyd had at least two previous felony convictions, was not allowed to own a firearm and faced a sentence of six to 30 years in prison with no chance of probation on the armed habitual criminal charge.

A judge set Boyd's bail at $200,000, Boyd's girlfriend posted $20,000 bond Feb. 3, and he was released from the Kane County jail on the condition he have no new criminal offenses and not consume drugs or alcohol, records show.

According to prosecutors and court records, Boyd was arrested and charged Feb. 4 with misdemeanor marijuana possession for having an unsealed cannabis container in a vehicle.

Authorities obtained a search warrant for Boyd's cellphone and, on Feb. 18, filed additional charges of armed habitual criminal and unlawful possession of a firearm - in this case, a 9 mm handgun on Nov. 5, 2019. Boyd was rearrested the next day, and bail was set at $150,000.

"The results of the search warrant depicted multiple photos and videos of the defendant in possession of multiple firearms," prosecutors said in a court filing.

Court records show Boyd did prison time for an April 2012 aggravated robbery in Kendall County and a January 2014 arrest for possession of a firearm by a felon.

He is next due in court April 22.
