Shadows play with sunlight in downtown Glenview

Downtown Glenview is illuminated in the soft light of an early autumn evening in this week's Sky View photo.

Most of the aerial photos I've taken this past summer have been taken during the day, and the lighting for each of those images has been fairly uniform. While those photos were nicely lit in bright sunshine, I was looking to add variety to my aerial photography.

An assignment brought me to the area somewhat later than usual recently, so afterward I used the opportunity to take a photograph of downtown Glenview as long shadows competed with the remaining sunlight a half-hour before sunset.

Scenes of static subjects can look quite different depending on lighting angles.

I composed the image so Glenview Road would meet the Metra tracks at the bottom of the photo. Lake Michigan is at the horizon line at the left of the photo, and Chicago's downtown skyline is at top left. Glenview's water tank along Waukegan Road is included in the image as well.

Pockets of sunlight highlight downtown Glenview buildings, while haze hangs over downtown Chicago.

Fall colors, which will provide additional opportunities for aerial photography, are just beginning to show on the trees in the distance.

While departing the area, I noticed that the lighting wasn't the only thing different that Friday evening.

Outdoor seating areas of nearby restaurants were well-patronized, adding a different ambience to downtown Glenview that doesn't necessarily exist during the middle of the day.
