DuPage sheriff investigating whether on-duty deputy ate inside restaurant

DuPage County sheriff's office employees have been told not to dine indoors at restaurants if they are in uniform or wearing other sheriff's office attire.

The order comes as the sheriff's office investigates whether a deputy and a community service volunteer ate inside a restaurant during Gov. J.B. Pritzker's ban on indoor dining. Someone this week reported seeing two marked sheriff's vehicles parked at The Verdict restaurant in Wheaton.

Supervisors are determining whether the duo ate inside the restaurant or got food to go, said Justin Kmitch, the sheriff's communications director.

In the meantime, all uniformed personnel, whether they are sworn officers or civilians, are prohibited from dining inside restaurants when they are wearing their sheriff's office attire or uniforms, Kmitch said.

The deputy continues to work while the matter is investigated, Kmitch said.

The restaurant at 600 S. County Farm Road is about a quarter-mile away from the DuPage County government complex.

Someone sent photos of the cars to CBS 2 News. According to a CBS 2 report, one of the restaurant's owners said the duo dined inside.

The governor banned indoor dining in DuPage and Kane counties beginning last Friday.

His order says that restaurants who offer inside dining could be charged with a misdemeanor. It says nothing about whether diners could face charges.
