25th annual Misericordia fundraiser to go virtual in 2021

The annual Misericordia "Heart of Gold" benefit may look a bit different this year, but the dedicated women of the Misericordia Women's League know that the show, and the race, must go on.

What is traditionally a lively event with 600 attendees has been re-imagined to keep the "Heart of Gold" spirit alive in a safe and healthy way. The 2021 virtual event, "A Night at the Races," will feature celebrity drop-ins, raffle prizes, a silent auction, and of course, dear Sister Rosemary.

The Feb. 26 event also will celebrate the longtime support of 2021 Heart of Gold Award recipients Kathy and Kevin Connor.

Throughout her nine years as a Women's League member, Kathy has continued to bring her positive spirit and enthusiasm to everything she does. Between organizing Secret Santa gift exchanges, leading benefit committees, and serving as a former Women's League president herself, Kathy has always been a true believer in the mission of Misericordia, Sister Rosemary and her entire team. Kathy and Kevin care so deeply about the well-being of the organization as a whole, and are both constantly seeking out new ways to get involved and contribute to the magic of Misericordia.

"When it comes to Misericordia, I really think seeing is believing," Kathy said. "Walking the halls and seeing the Art Department, Bakery, Coffee Packaging and Greenhouse Inn Restaurant, it is so evident that these residents are leading such full and loving lives. Their abilities are incredible, and it's such a happy place that it just draws you in."

Since 1996, the 100-plus women who make up the Misericordia Women's League have come together to host guests from across the Chicago area for a night of fun and entertainment.

"One positive thing to come out of this is that by going virtual, we are able to open our doors to more guests, more entertainment and even more ways to support Misericordia," said Ann Weithers, president of the Misericordia Women's League. "We have been given a unique opportunity to spread Misericordia's message further than ever, and we can't wait to celebrate with supporters new and old."

The 25th annual Heart of Gold Benefit: A Night at the Races will take place virtually at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26.
