Cubs place Duffy on injured list, add Wisdom

Before Tuesday's game in Pittsburgh, the Cubs placed Matt Duffy on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to May 23, with a low back strain.

Duffy, who became the Cubs' regular third baseman early in the season, missed three starts last week with the back injury. He returned to the lineup on Saturday in St. Louis, but left that game early when the back flared up again.

The Cubs brought up infielder Patrick Wisdom from Triple A Iowa and designated pitcher Jason Adam for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster. Adam dislocated his ankle and needed surgery a few days ago, so it's unclear if he'll pitch again this season.

Wisdom has been one of the hottest hitters at Iowa. Last week he hit 2 home runs on Thursday against the Omaha Stormchasers, then added a grand slam the next day. He's hitting .160 on the season.

Wisdom, 29, appeared in two games with the Cubs late last season. The Murrieta, Calif., native originally came up to the majors with St. Louis in 2018, then appeared in nine games for Texas the following year.

• Pitcher Alec Mills, on the injured list with a sore back, made his first rehab start for Iowa on Sunday and it didn't go particularly well. Mills was tagged for 5 earned runs, 7 hits and left after 1 2/3 innings.

"He'll start again Friday," Cubs manager David Ross said. "I know his start didn't go well. First time back, I think just getting back on the bump, trying to feel healthy, just didn't have his best start. So he'll continue to build off that, try to work back into pitching well."
