2 teens charged with murder in Aurora shooting

Two teenagers have been charged with first-degree murder in connection with a Monday night shooting in Aurora that left a North Aurora man dead, authorities said.

Charges were filed Wednesday against Fidel Bello, 17, and Cesar Ponce, 18. They each are being held on $1 million bail, according to Aurora police.

The two are accused of killing 46-year-old Samuel Ortiz-Rodriguez around 7:30 p.m. Monday in the 400 block of South Spencer Street.

Lt. Gregory Spayth said it appears, judging by videos and witness statements, that Bello and Ponce were walking on a sidewalk and got into an argument with Ortiz-Rodriguez, who was standing in a driveway. Bello shot Ortiz-Rodriguez twice, according to Spayth.

Police haven't determined what the argument was about, Spayth said.

Bello and Ponce were arrested Tuesday morning. Although Bello is 17, he is being charged as an adult.

Bello lives in the 300 block of Sheldon Avenue in Aurora. Ponce lives in the 500 block of East Downer Place.

Spayth credited residents and witnesses with providing information about the incident, including what direction the suspects fled.

He said Bello and Ponce are affiliated with a street gang, but Ortiz-Rodriguez was not.

Ponce's next court date is June 10. Bello's next court date is June 9.
