84-year-old woman dies in Schaumburg fire Friday night

An 84-year-old woman died Friday night in a fire at a single-family home in Schaumburg, officials said Saturday. The woman has been identified by the Cook County medical examiner's office as Marlene Murphy.

Schaumburg police and firefighters said they responded at 9:21 p.m. to a fire on the 0-100 block of Treebark Drive. On arrival, police observed flames and reported heavy smoke inside the home.

Officers found the 87-year-old homeowner inside and evacuated him. He said his wife was still upstairs. A police officer attempted to get to her but was overcome by heavy smoke and evacuated, police officials said in a news release.

Fire officials arrived and began "an aggressive interior attack." They conducted an extensive search of the home, finding Murphy upstairs. Attempts were made to resuscitate her, but they were unsuccessful and she was pronounced dead at the scene, police and fire officials said.

The homeowner was taken to Amita Health Alexian Brothers Medical Center and treated for burn injuries, police said. The officer who tried to get out was taken to the same hospital for smoke inhalation, treated, and released, police said.

The fire was put out in 10 minutes, fire officials said. Heavy smoke and fire damage were sustained at the residence, which was deemed uninhabitable, police said. A neighbor responded to provide assistance for the displaced homeowner.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Schaumburg Police Investigations Division and the Schaumburg Fire Department.
