Des Plaines Gard Club celebrates 90th anniversary

On Nov. 11, the Des Plaines Garden Club celebrated its 90th year at the club's annual holiday luncheon at Manzo's Banquets in Des Plaines.

Mary Peglow, Des Plaines Garden Club president, welcomed everyone. Club members were pleased to have Sen. Laura Murphy of the Illinois State Senate join the festivities. Sen. Murphy issued a Certificate of Recognition to the Des Plaines Garden Club for its 90th Year, 1931-2021. Andrew Goczkowski, the mayor of Des Plaines, also attended.

The luncheon was a huge success with 162 attendees. Sixty baskets were raffled off, and the bake sale table was filled with hundreds of homemade goodies. A silent auction included a variety of items, from an artisan handmade rocking horse to a pearl necklace.

The program featured Kim Hartmann, an independent horticulture consultant, educator and landscape designer. Hartmann created eight holiday centerpieces and inspired attendees with her use of color in traditional and contemporary holiday designs using a variety of flowers and flora materials.

A thank you goes to the Des Plaines Garden Club's community partners and all the club members who made donations. A big thank you also goes to the club members who worked so hard for the success of the event.

All proceeds from the holiday luncheon fund various garden club activities, including maintaining four community gardens, children's booths at the Des Plaines Spring Fun Fair and the Fall Fest, and an annual scholarship to a horticulture student.

The Des Plaines Garden Club appreciates the support of the Garden Clubs of America. In attendance were:

• Carol Yee, director Central Region of National Garden Clubs

• Marilyn Krueger, president Garden Clubs of Illinois (GCI)

• Carol Ohrn, 1st vice president of GCI

• Laurel Deboer, former GCI president, current president of the Flower Show Judges Council
