Carmel Catholic gearing up for Street Scenes Student Show

The 48th edition of Carmel Catholic High School's Street Scenes is going to look a little different this year.

Or maybe a lot different.

The weekend-long fundraiser will move outdoors for the first time, is currently scheduled for July 16-17, and will feature several music stages set up across the Carmel campus.

As always, the fun-filled weekend will feature bands, activities, improv, and more. The event will kick off Saturday, July 16, with a special Mass celebrating the Feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.

The popular Street Scenes Student Show will be held in person Feb. 10-12, the school's traditional Street Scenes dates. This year's theme - "We Can't Stop the Party" - will feature more than 40 students singing and dancing their way through a year of holidays and celebrations.

Five high-energy performances are scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10; and 7 and 8:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 11 and 12. Ticket prices are $10 for adults and $5 for seniors and children younger than 12. For more information or to purchase tickets to the Student Show, visit www.carmelstreetscenes.com.

To say that director Joyce Haqq is thrilled to see her students back on stage would be an understatement. Last year each number in the show was filmed individually and all vocals were prerecorded. The show was then edited together into one production for audience members to view at home.

"We're at the point where the kids are back from Christmas break and very, very busy, with rehearsals on Fridays and Saturdays," Haqq said. "For our students, though, it's fun and exciting because it means the performances are getting closer, and this is when they really start to bond as a cast. It's cool to see kids stepping up and taking their own initiative, trying to help make things better.

"It's been a crazy time," Haqq said. "But we hope a lot of people will decide to come see the performances in person, because it's really going to be a great show and the kids love being in front of an audience.
