Bears hire defensive backs coach James Rowe away from Colts

Bears head coach Matt Eberflus continues to poach his former employer's top defensive coaches.

The Bears named James Rowe the team's defensive backs coach Friday after he previously served in the same role for the Colts last season.

Already, the Bears have hired defensive coordinator Alan Williams, linebackers coach Dave Borgonzi and assistant defensive backs coach David Overstreet II away from Indianapolis.

Rowe has four years of NFL coaching experience. Prior to joining the Colts, he was the assistant defensive backs coach for the Washington Commanders from 2017-19. Sandwiched in between, he spent one season as the defensive backs coach at Appalachian State in 2020.

Earlier in his career, Rowe had numerous stops at the collegiate level, including Bethel University (2011), Jacksonville (2012-14), Florida (2015) and Valdosta State (2016).

Rowe was a high school coach at Cocoa (Florida) High School from 2007-10 and played college baseball at South Florida.
