Bears hire Smith away from Raiders as defensive line coach

The Bears have named Travis Smith their new defensive line coach, the team announced Tuesday.

Smith most recently served as the assistant defensive line coach for the Las Vegas Raiders over the past two seasons. With the Raiders, Smith worked closely with former Bears defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli, who is the defensive line coach in Las Vegas.

Smith joined the Raiders in 2012 as a defensive assistant and later spent several years as a defensive quality control coach. During his 10 years with the Raiders, he worked closely with the defensive line and outside linebackers. He has previous experience working with the Bears' star pass rusher Khalil Mack when both were with the Raiders.

The Bears have added numerous assistant coaches to head coach Matt Eberflus' staff in recent weeks, notably Luke Getsy as offensive coordinator, Alan Williams as defensive coordinator and Richard Hightower as special teams coordinator.
