Take a musical ride with the Naperville Winds Feb. 24
The Naperville Winds, the newest full-sized concert band in DuPage County, will take you on a musical ride through a roller coaster of styles and energy on Thursday, Feb. 24. Music director Sean Kelley has invited the Plainfield Central High School Wind Ensemble to share the stage, under the direction of Christopher Vanderwall and Amy Mullard.
The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Wentz Concert Hall at North Central College, 171 E. Chicago Ave. in Naperville.
This Plainfield Central High School Wind Ensemble program packs a punch with its variety, which includes: "Flourish for Wind Band" by Ralph Vaughan Williams, "Arabesque" by Samuel Hazo, and "Earth Song" by Frank Ticheli.
Following the ensemble's performance will be the Naperville Winds. As part of its mission, the program includes challenging concert band literature that is fun to play for the musicians and an earful for the audience.
The Naperville Winds continue the concert band literature with "Ride" by Samuel Hazo, and the epic Symphony No. 4 by David Maslanka. Also included on the program is "One Life Beautiful" by Julie Giroux and "Come Sunday" by Omar Thomas.
The two-movement "Come Sunday" is a tribute to the Black worship service and a salute to the jazz of Duke Ellington. The first movement challenges the musicians to play in an improvisatory jazz style, while still following the strict rhythms of printed music. The second movement, "Shout," is just pure frenzy and fun. frenzied and joyous climactic moments
