DAR Announces Student Award winners
On February 13, 2022 The Ansel Brainerd Cook Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution announced its student award winners at their chapter meeting held at the Libertyville Civic Center.
As part of its mission to support the study of American History, the NSDAR sponsors an American History Essay contest for 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders each year.
The Ansel Brainerd Cook American History Chairman, Nancy Alban, sends the essay materials to public, private, and parochial schools, as well as registered home-study students in the Libertyville area. The Contest was established to encourage young people to think creatively about our nation's great history and learn about history in a new light.
The topic of the essay this year was the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. November 11, 2021, marked the 100th anniversary of the dedication of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Imagine that you had a brother who lost his life on the battlefields of France during World War I. You and your family attended the November 11, 1921, dedication of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington, D.C. Describe what this meant to you and your family. Why is it important to remember those who gave their lives to serve our nation?
Many wonderful essays were submitted by sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students from Frassati Catholic Academy in Wauconda, IL.
Thank you to everyone who participated, and congratulations to the following students: Sofia Cardenas, sixth grade; Andrew Sanderson, seventh grade; and Zadie Navarrete, eighth grade. Each winner in their respective grade level received a monetary award, a certificate and a medal.
Created in 1934, the DAR Good Citizens program and scholarship contest is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship. The program is open to all senior class students enrolled in accredited public or private secondary schools that are in good standing with their state boards of education. The student selected as the school's DAR Good Citizen must have the qualities of dependability (which includes truthfulness, loyalty, and punctuality); service (which includes cooperation, courtesy, and consideration of others); leadership (which includes personality, self-control, and ability to assume responsibility); and patriotism (which includes unselfish interest in family, school, community and nation)
These students were selected by their teachers and peers because they demonstrated these qualities throughout their four years in High School to an outstanding degree.
The Ansel Brainerd Cook DAR Good Citizen's Award and Scholarship Contest Chairman, Lee Allen-Russell, works with the school counselors from each of the participating high schools in the Libertyville area to have them submit their "Good Citizen" to represent their school.
Three seniors were chosen by their respective High Schools, Grace Evelyn Stanley, Mundelein High School; Ella Baffico, Libertyville High School; and Shayna Weinstein, Vernon Hills High School. Each school's DAR Good Citizen received a DAR Good Citizen pin, certificate, wallet recognition card, and a monetary award.
The Ansel Brainerd Cook Chapter is proud to announce Ella Baffico from Libertyville High School as our chapter winner and recipient of the DAR Good Citizen Award. Ella was also our scholarship winner and received a monetary award.

The ABC chapter also had a very special guest speaker join us. Mr. Lincoln portrayed by Kevin Wood, professional Lincoln presenter. Mr. Lincoln addressed the audience with "Lincoln on Leadership" the 16 precedents from the 16th President. Mr. Lincoln discussed the 16 ways which he strove to lead our nation and our people in his day and in particular when he was President. With each precedent read, he gave an example of his own life.
The Ansel Brainerd Cook Chapter, NSDAR, is celebrating our 45th year. The chapter was organized in September 1977 in Libertyville by 17 members. The chapter has now grown to include more than 175 members. In 2021, the ABC chapter members logged in 7,705 volunteer hours in the towns we work and live in.
