Buffalo Grove Scholastic Bowl team wins state tourney
The Buffalo Grove High School Scholastic Bowl team has had an unforgettable season.
In late February, Buffalo Grove put an exclamation point on an excellent year by winning the prestigious NAQT Illinois State Championship tournament, besting the top teams from all over the state.
Rohan Ganeshan was the tournament's top scorer. Bruno Ibrahim-Betts, Abigail Toushin and Joe Van Hoy rounded out the team, which beat archrival Barrington to win the final match at Champaign Centennial High School in Champaign.
"It is so exceptionally rare to watch a team come together the way this crew did at NAQT State," head coach Scott Russell said, "Rohan certainly had a world-class showing, but Bruno, Abigail and Joe all showcased the depth of their knowledge in each of their own specialties. This was truly a Buffalo Grove team victory against the best that Illinois Scholastic Bowl has to offer."
The team also became IHSA regional champions for the second year in a row in the Class 2A state tournament bracket March 7. In the subsequent sectional matchups, Buffalo Grove lost to Barrington by the narrowest of margins.
But their season is not over; ahead in May and June are the national high school quiz bowl tournaments, which bring together elite teams from across the country.
The Buffalo Grove team is currently ranked fifth in the nation.
