League of Women Voters hosts virtual and in-person book discussions on 'A Most Beautiful Thing'

In April, the League of Women Voters of Roselle-Bloomingdale will host book discussions on "A Most Beautiful Thing: The True Story of America's First All-Black High School Rowing Team" by Arshay Cooper.

A virtual discussion will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, via Zoom. An in-person book discussion will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 23, at the Roselle Public Library, 40 S. Park St. in Roselle.

It is the moving, true story of a group of Manley Career Academy students, many of whom were in rival gangs from the West Side of Chicago, who join together to form the first all-Black high school rowing team in the nation. It is a story of transformation that can spark thought-provoking community discussions on education, work ethic, poverty, philanthropy, law enforcement, spirituality, and empowerment.

The League is reading this book as part of Lake Park Reads, a multi-community reading program.

The League of Women Voters of Roselle-Bloomingdale Book Club reads fiction and nonfiction books that will open our minds and generate discussion. They select books that empower readers to help make the world a better place and provide a greater understanding of public affairs including political, social, economic, environmental, and other societal issues.

The highly acclaimed documentary of the book, "A Most Beautiful Thing," narrated by Common, is available on Peacock, Xfinity, and Amazon Prime.
