Roselle Lions Club to host spring blood drive April 12
The Roselle Lions Club is hosting its spring blood drive "Hope Springs Eternal" from 1 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, at the Roselle American Legion, 344 E. Maple Ave.
Lions Club President Bob Jilke says the club hopes to collect at least 30 pints of blood during the five-hour event. Platelet donors are also welcome to attend.
According to Versiti Blood Centers, 30 pints of blood will save up to three lives. Blood supplies are low due to the ongoing pandemic and donor's unwillingness to donate during COVID-19.
Appointments are preferred but walk-ins are welcome although making an appointment will save donor's time. Appointments can be made online at bit.ly/BloodDrive-4-12-22.
Donors must wear a mask and bring a photo ID. They are encouraged to eat a healthy meal and drink plenty of water before donating. When donation is finished juice and water as well as snacks will be available.
According to the Mayo Clinic and other sources, there are many reasons to donate besides wanting to help another person in need of blood. Donating blood can reveal potential health problems since a sample is tested before full donation is used. Annual blood donations can reduce the risk of heart attack by 88% and may reduce the risk of cancer. A donation can reduce harmful iron in the blood and promote liver health.
Finally, giving blood can help a donor's mental state. The psychological health benefit received from knowing that the donation is helping others is as helpful as the physical health benefit.
