Village of Fox Lake awarded Safe Routes to Schools funding

Fox Lake was recently awarded the Safe Routes to Schools grant aimed at improving the safety of pedestrian walkways near Fox Lake schools. The grant is administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation using federal funds. The department allocated $12.3 million to 57 projects across Illinois to be used for the design and construction of projects in close proximity to public elementary and middle schools.

Of the $12.3 million, Fox Lake was awarded $235,429 to be used by the School Safety Task Force, comprised of the village, police department and Stanton School, for the construction of a multimodal path adjacent to Stanton Middle School. This path will create a safer route to the school and decrease conflicts between pedestrians and motorists. The School Safety Task Force plans to double the width of the current sidewalk along Hawthorne Lane from the school to Grand Avenue.
