Glen Ellyn native Stout is DFA'd by Cubs just hours after strong outing
During Wednesday's ugly loss to San Diego, left-hander Eric Stout was the lone bright spot on the Cubs' pitching staff.
The Glen Ellyn native retired all five Padres batters he faced, striking out four, in the Cubs' 19-5 loss at Wrigley Field.
The good news was short-lived, however, as Stout was designated for assignment before Thursday's game. It's the type of move the Cubs make often. Stout pitched two days in a row and would have been unavailable Thursday, so the Cubs brought up a fresher arm in veteran Adrian Sampson.
The Cubs' bullpen has taken a beating in recent days, giving up 11 runs in each of the previous two games, and that's not counting Frank Schwindel's guest appearance on the mound in the ninth inning.
There is a decent chance Stout will end up back with the Iowa Cubs. Teams typically designate a player for assignment in order to open up a spot on the 40-man roster. If Stout clears waivers, he could re-sign with the Cubs or any other team.
Stout, a product of Wheaton St. Francis High School, appeared in 16 games for the Iowa Cubs this season with a 3.94 ERA. He allowed 2 runs in 2 innings during his Cubs debut on Tuesday.
Sampson appeared in one game for the Cubs earlier this season, working one inning on May 8.
