Signal Hill NSDAR announces history essay contest winners

Imagine you are a delegate from one of the 13 colonies serving in the Second Continental Congress, 1775-1781, and you need to determine what is important for you to accomplish for your colony.

Participants had no trouble answering this call when writing their essays for the American History Essay Contest sponsored by the Signal Hill Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, of Barrington.

Roslyn Road Elementary School fifth grader Logan Tuchband was spot on in his essay and won first place in the chapter's contest that drew 28 participants. He went on to win at the DAR Society's Illinois District IV and Illinois state levels.

Logan read his essay at the annual Youth Awards Day on Feb. 19 at the Barrington Area Library. He has been invited to read his essay at the District IV meeting on March 3 in Lombard and at the State Conference on April 19 in Bloomington.

Second-place winner is Annie Sui; tied for third are Alessia Emery and Shaila Patel. All are fifth graders at Roslyn Road Elementary School in Barrington.

"We extend special thanks to the parents, teachers, and judges within Barrington District 220 who provide support to the students and encourage them to participate in this annual contest," said Joyce Wright, Regent of the Signal Hill Chapter, NSDAR.

"Our chapter is delighted to provide this opportunity to grade school students to learn and write about our nation's early history and be recognized for their efforts."
