Letter: Prepping for pollinators
I have been glad to see the recent articles on plant sustainability and pollinators in the Daily Herald. However, I disagree that not mowing lawns until Mother Day will have an environmental impact. While there will be less emissions from gasoline powered lawn mowers, there are little, if any, benefits to pollinators. Insects do not lay their eggs on turf. We do not need to pollinate turf. There is no turf nectar to benefit butterflies.
A recent article about "The case for a (somewhat) messy spring garden" did explain the advantages to the environment of leaving plant debris in garden and non-turf areas. This is where butterfly and moth eggs might be waiting to hatch.
