Ministry send-off: Geneva church celebrates departing pastor

Looking back, the Rev. Lisa Telomen takes pride in a prawl-shawl ministry she created at United Methodist Church of Geneva.

Preaching her final sermon Sunday, "Putting First Things First," she said, "The prayer shawl group was formed as a way church folks could give hurting people a tangible reminder of our love for them, a way to feel our arms wrapping around them in the hug of a shawl. "Over 100 were given in the first year!"

After three years in ministry at Geneva UMC, Rev. Telomen has announced plans to relocate to First UMC of Redondo Beach, Calif. She was honored at a packed, post-worship reception in the fellowship hall.

Guests included Sylviane and Christian Cowet who traveled from Paris, France, for the event.

Rev. Telomen recalled arriving in Geneva during the pandemic. "We figured out how to collect food for those who were struggling without jobs that had been ended due to pandemic shutdowns," she said.

"We figured out how to have choral and bell music online, when we could not sing safely together. We figured out how to do Bible studies and book studies and prayer group online. We figured out how to do communion at home, ashes on the go, potlucks and even retreats outside!"

The Rev. Rob Hamilton, senior pastor, opened the send-off with a welcome and tribute to the Rev. Telomen. He was followed to the podium by Ken McNeil, chair, staff parish-relations committee.

During an open-microphone period, husband Rodney lauded his wife as "one of my very all-time favorite pastors."

She concluded the event saying, "My time with you here in Geneva has been one of deep joy, because together we have focused on the first things: how to love one another and help each other through a challenging time in our lives.

"We have put others first, the least and lost, and have helped each other through times of need. I am grateful for your love and care for me and my family, for your love and care for others in need, and for your care for the earth and all her creatures."
