Save the date for upcoming Vernon Township events

Vernon Township has upcoming events that will provide free shredding services, safe driving classes for senior citizens and opportunities to spend time with friends and family.

• Unplug Illinois Day: Unplug Illinois Day is Saturday, July 15. Vernon Township invites you to take a break from your electronics and get outside to enjoy the Jacob Grossman Memorial Pool, 16652 N. Buffalo Grove Road, in Vernon Hills.

The pool is open from noon to 6 p.m., so spend the day with friends and family and take advantage of "buy one, get one free" daily admission all day long.

• Free Shredding event: The Vernon Township Highway Department will be hosting a free shredding event from 12:30-3 p.m. Monday, July 24, at the Township Administrative Building, 3050 N. Main St., in Buffalo Grove.

Residents can shred their canceled or unused checks, old insurance policies, bills, medical records and invoices - limited to three medium sized boxes or bags. Please note that no metal or plastics can be shredded.

To learn more, call (847) 634-4600 and ask for Tracy.

• Movie Night at the Park: Join the township on Friday, Aug. 4, at approximately 8:30 p.m. for a free showing of Disney's "Lilo & Stitch." Participants are asked to bring picnic blankets and/or lawn chairs and get ready for a comedy of intergalactic proportions.

Entrance into the pool will be discounted from 5-8 p.m., giving you and your family time for poolside fun before the movie. The concession stand will be open late, and raffles will be held to help fund future community events.

• AARP Driver Safety Class: Refresh your driving skills and save money on insurance premiums by taking the AARP Driver Safety Course from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, and Wednesday, Aug. 23. The cost of the class is $20 for AARP members and $25 for nonmembers. Space is limited. Register with Chris DePalma at Chris@VernonTownship.com or call (847) 634-4600.
