Ella Fitzgerald Competition winner to sing at St. Charles Jazz Weekend event Sept. 8

Julia Danielle, winner of the 2022 International Ella Fitzgerald Jazz Vocal Competition, will perform in concert Friday, Sept. 8, along with a jazz quartet led by renowned pianist Jeremy Kahn.

The concert marks her debut performance during the annual St. Charles Jazz Weekend.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. at the historic Baker Community Center, 101 S. Second St. in downtown St. Charles.

For more information and links to online ticketing, visit www.NorrisCulturalArts.com. Tickets are $30, which includes complimentary beverages and snacks.

Danielle is a vocalist, arranger, educator, and composer based in the heart of the vibrant jazz scene of Chicago. Her classical voice and opera training at Northwestern University laid the solid foundation for her to now bend and blend the lines of classic and contemporary jazz and soul music.

Danielle has had the opportunity to perform alongside staples of the scene including bassists Clark Sommers and Dennis Carroll, drummers George Fludas and Isaiah Spencer, pianist Jeremy Kahn, and saxophonists Sharel Cassity and Isaiah Collier.

While this performance marks her first St. Charles appearance, Danielle sings in many leading Chicago area jazz venues, including The Jazz Showcase, Andy's Jazz Club, Winter's Jazz Club, Elastic Arts, and The Fulton Street Collective, as well as at fusion venues like Lincoln Hall, Martyrs, Schubas Tavern, GMan Tavern, and The Golden Dagger.

Jazz pianist Jeremy Kahn has become a familiar presence and audience favorite during recent seasons of Norris-produced concerts at the Baker Community Center.

Born near Chicago, he earned a piano performance degree from Boston's New England Conservatory. He lived in New York City for twelve action-packed years, and now resides in Oak Park. Although Kahn is mainly a jazz pianist, having played in jazz-type venues around the world, he also plays in pit orchestras at leading Chicago area theaters.

Kahn has performed with a veritable "who's who" of jazz and pop, including Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, Joni Mitchell, Phil Woods, Teramasu Hino, Charlie Haden, Aretha Franklin, Barbara Cook, Alvin and the Chipmunks, and everyone in between.

The concert launches the fall season of four Saturday evening concerts produced at the Baker Community Center by the Norris Cultural Arts Center.

The series continues on Oct. 21 when vocalist Tatum Langley and a jazz quartet perform a concert of Broadway favorites in "A Walk Down 42nd Street."

On Nov. 18, popular folk singer Lee Murdock presents his annual "Christmas Ship Concert," featuring the Dock Wallopers. The series concludes on Dec. 16 with a concert of big band and jazz standards - plus some seasonal holiday tunes - performed by the Pete Ellman Big Band.
