Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with Schaumburg Library programs

Schaumburg Township District Library is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month (recognized Sept. 15 through Oct. 15) with a variety of programs for you to enjoy.

On Tuesday, Sept. 19, join Catalina Maria Johnson, music journalist and host of the radio show and podcast Beat Latino, for an online program to learn about Chicagoland's Latine arts, music, poetry and literature scene.

Artist Cristina Colunga will be at our Hanover Park Branch on Tuesday, Sept. 26, for a Hispanic Heritage Month craft. She'll teach you to paint miniature Alebrijes - fantastical creatures first created by a Mexican papier-mâché artist.

On Thursday, Sept. 28, join presenter Karla Alba for an online program where she'll discuss her Mexican heritage while teaching you how to make easy tacos and a great tequila cocktail to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.

Our regular Art Studio program (for kids 6-9 years old) will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month on Tuesday, Oct. 10, by learning about and creating art based on the work of Afro-Dominican artist Eilen Itzel Mena.

Schaumburg Library also offers ongoing bilingual programs for kids, including these Spanish bilingual programs:

• Cuentos y Canciones: Spanish Bilingual Storytime (2-5 years with caregiver).

• Leer y Explorar: Spanish Bilingual Book Club (5-9 years).

• Hablar y Jugar: Talk and Play (9-12 years).
