Parents can sign up for free series on mental health for teens

Anxiety, pandemic isolation, and social media impact our youth.

Free presentations will be offered at 7 p.m. on consecutive Wednesdays at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 1244 W. Army Trail Road in Carol Stream.

It will begin with "Ending the Silence for Families" on Oct. 11. Families will learn mental health facts, statistics, warning signs, and how to talk to youth, and school staff. It is presented by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) DuPage Chapter.

In "Social Media Safety Strategies" on Oct. 18, parents will learn about the negative impact of social media on the mental health of youth. It is presented by Donna Bartlett, a licensed clinical social worker at Ascension (formerly Alexian Bros. Hospital).

In "Post Pandemic Coping" on Oct. 25, parents will learn healthy relationship techniques to counter teen substance abuse, porn, vaping, and sex. It is presented by John F. Williams, a licensed clinical professional counselor with the Northern Illinois Crisis Intervention Team Regional Coordinator.

On Nov. 1, it will be an overview of mental health and social service resources, presented by Kathy McNamara, a licensed clinical social worker and social services supervisor with the Carol Stream Police Department, and Sandra McDonnell, executive director with Navigate Adolescence.
