Judge orders detention for man accused of illegally possessing gun in Naperville

A Chicago man was ordered detained pretrial Wednesday on charges alleging he illegally possessed a gun in the parking lot of a Naperville business.

DuPage County Judge Joshua Dieden granted prosecutors' request that Ronald Richardson, 34, of the 12000 block of South Aberdeen Street, be held until further notice of the court.

Richardson is charged with being an armed habitual criminal and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.

According to prosecutors' petition for detention, Naperville police patrolling the parking lot at 11:38 p.m. Monday saw an extended ammunition magazine protruding from a gun that was a driver's-side door compartment of a parked car.

Richardson and three females were later seen getting into the car later, with the Chicago man in the driver's seat, prosecutors said.

Police said officers then found a .40-caliber Glock 27 handgun, loaded with 19 rounds of ammunition, in the vehicle, which they say Richardson owns.

Richardson is on parole for a Cook County conviction of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, according to prosecutors. He told police the gun was not his and that he did not know how it was in the car, authorities said.
