One dead after early morning, single-vehicle crash in Park Ridge

Park Ridge police say a man was killed early Tuesday when the SUV he was driving crashed into two utility poles on Oakton Street.

The crash occurred at about 2:30 a.m. as the 2017 Mercedes SUV was speeding east on Oakton between Greenwood and Cumberland avenues, police said. The vehicle veered into the westbound lanes before striking the utility poles on the north side of the street, according to police.

The crash caused power outages for several hours.

Police officials identified the driver as Shalom Peters, 37, of Morton Grove. Peters was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other passengers in the vehicle. The eastbound lanes of Oakton were reopened after about 12 hours, however the westbound lanes remain closed due to ongoing utility repairs being made by ComEd.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing as well.

Earlier reports that the Mercedes was involved in a police chase and related to a stolen vehicle investigation near Elmhurst were incorrect, police said.
