Oct. 25: Voices of Lake County hosts sustainability event at CLC's Japanese Garden

Explore the essence of Japanese gardens with Voices of Lake County from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 25 in College of Lake County's (CLC) Japanese garden at Grayslake Campus. The free event is open to the public and part of a community project called Voices of Lake County. It focuses on serenity, symmetry and the balance of nature.

Voices of Lake County seeks to celebrate, empower and amplify voices from the wide range of communities located in Lake County, especially those that have been historically silenced or underrepresented in higher education.

The group focuses on a different theme each year. This year's theme is Sustainable Lake County, an exploration of environmentalism and sustainability through the lens of the arts and humanities.

The event has three parts:

Explore how traditional Japanese values and the garden's physical aesthetics promote sustainability in a discussion led by CLC College Readiness and Dual Credit Assistant and Student Sustainability Club Advisor Shannon Bassi.

Experience a gentle movement session incorporating the concepts of symmetry, serenity and the balance of nature in a movement session led by Dance and Yoga Instructor and PACE Program Coordinator Lamaiya Lancaster.

Engage in a creative reflection activity with seeded paper, inspired by Haiku poetry in a reflection led by English Instructor Laura Otto.

"This interdisciplinary event engages participants in activities that highlight the connectivity between sustainability and nature while embodying the college's collaborative culture," Lancaster said. "We are excited to bring together faculty, staff and students for this experience in the Japanese gardens, one of hidden gems on the Grayslake Campus."

Light snacks will be provided. For more information, contact the Voice of Lake County planning committee at CLC.voices@clcillinois.edu
