CLC's Art of Jazz welcomes Grammy-nominated trumpeter

College of Lake County welcomes three-time Grammy Award nominee jazz trumpeter, arranger and composer Tim Hagans as the guest artist for the 47th annual Art of Jazz concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 19, on the Grayslake Campus James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts main stage, 19351 W. Washington St., Grayslake.

"We are excited to welcome trumpeter and composer Tim Hagans to CLC," Music Instructor Dr. Michael Flack said. "He is one of the most adventurous, creative and thoughtful improvisers in the music business today."

Known for his outstanding jazz trumpet talents, Hagans was featured in the 2001 Swedish documentary "Boogaloo Road," and was granted an honorary Doctor of Music degree by Sibelius Academy Helsinki in June 2012.

Hagans was the recipient of the 2008 IAJE/ASCAP Established Composer commission and was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Composition Grant.

Hagans received guidance and inspiration from famous musicians such as Thad Jones, Ernie Wilkins, Joe Lovano, Bob Belden and Dexter Gordon. It was Jones who inspired Hagans to start writing songs, and his first composition was featured on a Thad Jones Eclipse album.

Additionally, Hagans will present a free master class, open to the public to learn from his jazz expertise, from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 18, in Room P-101.

Tickets are $8, $7 for students, senior citizens and military. Buy tickets online or visit James Lumber Center Box Office. Box office hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
