The college bowl farce

The college bowls this year have become farcical. With so many players opting out from playing to prepare for their NFL careers, the quality of the bowl games has deteriorated. No doubt, the prospect of an NFL contract worth millions of dollars is a valid reason for not playing but let’s not forget that the top players already have lucrative NIL contracts.

Some suggest that expanding the college playoffs to 12 teams will solve the problem. Expansion will only deepen network revenue and the money divided amongst the colleges. It will not change the players’ decisions to protect themselves from injury.

The regular 12-game college schedule is sufficient for players to demonstrate their talent. They do not need another expanded bowl playoff season. College football bowls will never be the same.
