Cubs announce coaching staff for 2024 season
The Cubs officially announced new manager Craig Counsell's coaching staff for the 2024 season Tuesday, and there are plenty of familiar faces returning.
Counsell, who joined the Cubs on Nov. 13 after managing the Brewers the last nine years, is keeping 10 coaches who worked under manager David Ross last year.
“I felt like it was largely a good staff in place,” Counsell told reporters at the winter meetings last month. “There were some really good pieces in place and there were some places for growth on the staff that I think I can help with.
“In the end, it's just to help players. That's what our job is as coaches and I think we have some really good tool sets on the coaching staff to do so.”
The four newcomers are bench coach Ryan Flaherty, who held the same position with the Padres last season, bullpen coach Darren Holmes, the Orioles' assistant pitching coach in 2023, major-league field coordinator Mark Strittmatter, who was the Rockies' catching coordinator the last 11 years, and assistant hitting coach John Mallee.
Last season, Mallee was Class AAA Iowa's hitting coach. Mallee was the Cubs' hitting coach from 2015-17.
Third-base coach Willie Harris, pitching coach Tommy Hottovy, hitting coach Dustin Kelly, first-base coach Mike Napoli, assistant pitching coach Daniel Moskos, assistant hitting coaches Juan Cabreja and Jim Adduci, major-league coaches Jonathan Mota and Alex Smith and bullpen catcher Garrett Lloyd all return to the Cubs this season.
New addition:
According to his Instagram page, right-hander Colten Brewer has agreed to a contract with the Cubs.
A 31-year-old relief pitcher, Brewer appeared in 3 games with the Yankees last season and allowed 4 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks in 8.1 innings.
Over five seasons with New York, Boston and San Diego, Brewer is 2-5 with a 4.98 ERA in 84 games (4 starts).
