Buffalo Grove police promote trio of commanders

The new year brought changes within Buffalo Grove’s police ranks, as three former lieutenants were sworn in Tuesday as commanders.

The promotions come after a wave of retirements recently depleted the department’s command staff.

“These promotions and new ranks are an integral part of our police department command level restructuring in 2024,” Police Chief Brian Budds said.

The new commanders are Tom Nugent, Tara Anderson and Tony Turano.

Nugent is a 34-year veteran of the Buffalo Grove force. He was promoted to sergeant in 2001 and then to lieutenant in 2014. He also serves as an assistant commander with the Lake County Major Crime Task Force.

Anderson is a 23-year veteran of the force. She originally was hired as a desk officer in 2000, before being sworn in as a police officer a year later. She’s served as a youth investigator and was promoted to sergeant in 2014 then lieutenant in 2017.

Turano is a 17-year veteran who was promoted to sergeant in 2020 and has served as acting lieutenant since October. He was a member of the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System Mobile Field Force and is also a member of the Lake County Major Crime Task Force.
