Sinfonietta Bel Canto to hold concerto competition

The Sinfonietta Bel Canto is hosting its first concerto competition for young musicians on Sunday, Jan. 28.

The concert will be held at 3 p.m. at the St. Paul United Church of Christ, 5739 Dunham Road in Downers Grove.

Enjoy works by Haydn, Mozart, Bruch, Dittersdorf, Massenet, and Liszt in this wonderful display of area talent.

The finalists for this competition are: Madison Barber, oboe, and Mina Pollack, horn, in the Wind/Brass category; Elliot King and Joyce Wang, violin, and Margot Sherman, harp, in the Strings/Harp category; and Yan-Ching Lam, Shruti Prasad, and Sachi Sheth in Piano category.

All finalists are 18 years or younger.

Finalists will be competing for cash prizes of $150 in each of their categories, as well as a $100 audience favorite award.

Under the baton of Maestro Dan D’Andrea, the orchestra also will perform Haydn’s Symphony No. 99 in Eb Major.

This is the seventh of 12 of his London Symphonies. It was composed in Vienna in anticipation of his second tour to London. It premiered in 1794 and is the first of Haydn’s symphonies to feature two clarinets, an influence of his most talented student Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Tickets are $25, $22 for seniors, or $8 for students.

Ticket information can be found through the SBC website, sinfoniettabelcanto.org or calling (630) 384-5007. Parking is free and there is ample intimate seating.

This program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency and National Endowment for the Arts.

The Sinfonietta Bel Canto is an orchestra devoted to serving the Downers Grove area.
