Batavia brewery to host Pub Theology conversation Jan. 25

Sturdy Shelter Brewing Co. in Batavia will host a faith conversation on Thursday, Jan. 25.

The fourth in a Pub Theology series of informal discussions will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the riverfront brewery, 10 Shumway Ave. The public is invited. Admission and parking are free

The Jan. 25 suggested topic is the purpose and meaning of life. A handout listing conversation-starter questions will be provided.

Co-facilitators are Geneva pastors Rev. Scot Hull of Unitarian Universalist Society; Rev. Stephanie Anthony of Fox Valley Presbyterian Church; and Rev. Rob Hamilton of United Methodist Church of Geneva.

The schedule of future discussions is:

• Feb. 22, at Sturdy Shelter, on "The Devil, Testing and Temptation"

• March 21, at a location to be announced, on "Swearing: Profanity, Making an Oath, Unholy Language"

• April 25, at a location to be announced, on "Dominion and Stewardship of the Earth"

Rev. Hamilton said the purpose of the gatherings is to bring people with different views together to converse over beverages. He added that the event encourages open and honest conversation about things that matter, at a table where all perspectives are welcome.

"We aim to dive deeply into topics involving faith, meaning, identity, culture, politics and more! Bring your questions and your curiosity and respectfully engage with people of varying religious traditions, philosophical perspectives and life experiences," he said.

Rev. Hamilton added, "Gathering various voices and different views amid strangers and friends alike is really important right now in our country.

"Having a specific topic with basic ground rules while meeting in an informal atmosphere is a faithful witness to the way of Christ who valued the dignity of every person, even those who disagree with him and even took his life."

Ground rules include "not everyone here drinks alcohol ... not everyone believes what I believe" and "we will respect diversity and value our differences."

The series continues on Thursdays Jan. 25, Feb. 22, March 21 and April 25.

Rev. Hamilton said the gathering is open to anyone who is willing to meet new persons and possible new perspectives.
