The Hideout of Schaumburg plans celebration at original location before moving next door

The Hideout of Schaumburg bar and restaurant plans a Last Call Party at its original shopping center location next weekend before a short hiatus for its move to the freestanding restaurant building next door.

Owner Jennifer Strang said she expects The Hideout to be closed about a week, but she hopes to reopen before the Super Bowl on Feb. 11 in the former Smiling Buddha building at 1220 Valley Lake Drive in Schaumburg.

The celebration at the original location in the Valley Lake Shopping Center at 1230 Valley Lake Drive will begin at 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27. The last day of operation there will be Sunday, Jan. 28.

Opening day at the new location is dependent on village inspections as well as the relocation of all the unique fixtures that made The Hideout The Hideout.

“We’re moving everything over in a day,” Strang said.

During the eight years she’s owned The Hideout, it’s been the only tenant of the shopping center where The Sponge Reef, Dawn’s Pub and Uncle Vern's were prior occupants of Unit D.

That was not her expectation when she opened.

“I said I wanted to bring back life to that strip mall,” she told the property manager at the time.

Strang said she was told her lease would not be renewed, but she has been eyeing the new space for some time. She said she’s had the feeling that the property owner has had different plans for the site for some time now, which are only now being acted on. But the fact she always paid her rent on time, even while being shut down during the pandemic, probably reduced any sense of urgency, she added.

Smiling Buddha opened in 1976 and expanded in 1981, but has been shuttered for more than a decade.

With about 50% more space, including a much bigger kitchen, Strang is planning a stronger emphasis on food.

Karaoke has always been popular at The Hideout, and the new location will have a stage for performers.

Strang anticipates that the shopping center she’s leaving is likely to be demolished, but said her new location will have all the parking it needs no matter what happens next door.
