Man gets 23 years for robbing Wheaton Sprint store

A man who robbed a Sprint store in Wheaton was sentenced Tuesday to 23 years in prison.

DuPage County Judge Michael Reidy sentenced Denzel Furance, 25, formerly of Calumet City. Furance pleaded guilty in July to armed robbery with a firearm.

Furance robbed the store of nearly $40,000 in merchandise.

The sentence included an automatic 15-year enhancement because Furance used a gun. Prosecutors asked that he be sentenced to 40 years in prison.

Around 7:45 p.m. on Nov. 8, 2019, Furance entered the Sprint store at 212 Danada Square West. He was wearing a mask and carrying a semi-automatic weapon.

He ordered two workers to go to a back storage room, where products, a safe and a third worker were located. He ordered one of the workers to bind the others’ wrists and ankles with duct tape, then bound the remaining worker himself.

Furance ordered them to open the safe, and then he stole about 58 items.

He then covered the workers’ eyes and mouths with duct tape and left. He dropped some items and then returned several minutes later to retrieve them.

Furance must serve at least 50% of his sentence before being eligible for parole. He received credit for the 4¼ years he spent in jail awaiting trial, plus 40 days credit for participating in jail programming.

A co-defendant, Stephon Little, awaits trial. His next court date is Feb. 26.
