Arlington Heights author pens book set in 1930s Chicago

Terra3 Communications has acquired the publishing rights to the novel “Whispers in a Phone Booth: A Depression-Era Tale of Danger and Deception” written by Joseph Reed, a Chicago commercial real estate leader turned author, who writes under the pen name J. Daniel Reed. The book was recently published on Dec. 14.

Four young emigrants escape Poland just as World War I unleashes devastation upon Europe. The story follows the refugees as they establish new lives in a Chicago neighborhood, fighting anti-immigrant bigotry. The story fast forwards to 1930s Chicago. “Whispers in a Phone Booth” takes place in the same Chicago Northside neighborhood that was the first American home to Reed’s grandparents upon their emigration out of Eastern Europe. They all met and married in Chicago.

Explains the author, “I use the historical fiction genre because it allows me to share a story my father told me of a harrowing event he witnessed in Chicago as a 17-year-old. Part of the description of the incident is based on my father’s exact words.”

Building upon the success of his debut novel, “The First Wolf Pack: A Dog’s Fable,” the newly-released book uses complex relationships, tragic ordeals, hidden identities and emotional struggles that take the reader on a journey to examine the importance of community and the choices we make when fighting to overcoming trauma. Furthermore, the author explores the virtues of repentance and forgiveness for the characters who have suffered different forms of trauma and loss.

“One of the reasons I wrote the book is because it contains messages the world needs to hear and embrace right now in these turbulent times,” explained Reed. “It’s a tale of charity, faith, and hope.”
