Aurora’s Fox Valley Mall hosts two cultural celebrations for Black History Month, Lunar New Year

It was a multicultural weekend in Aurora where both Black History Month and Lunar New Year celebrations were held at Fox Valley Mall.

Crowds gathered at the same time as two simultaneous events put a spotlight on Aurora’s diversity.

The Chinese community celebrated the Lunar New Year — the Year of the Dragon — with a dragon dance, cultural performances, martial arts demonstrations, and local vendors.

The celebration highlighted Asian youth and adults.

Aurora’s Black community celebrated Black History Month by spotlighting two traditional activities: a special performance by the 40 and Over Double Dutch Club and the Chicago-based dancing art form known as stepping.

Chicago Stepping is a style of dance characterized by smooth rhythmic movements and fancy footwork.
