Alabama court ruling raises frightening future

I read with increasing horror the story about the Alabama Supreme Court’s decision that frozen embryos are considered children. That indicates that each of these “children” are being held hostage in a state of perpetual inability to fully live their lives. Their parents are being allowed to perpetuate this child abuse while they decide if they want a child. If their family is complete, they can instruct the storage facility to destroy this child as it’s outlived its usefulness.

A better solution, since these embryos are children, shouldn’t the parents be required to implant the embryos within a time frame decided by the court? This should also compel the parents to implant the embryos after the mother has undergone all the preparation of her body to maximize the chances of survival for the baby — and repeat this procedure for each embryo, regardless of the number, or the parents’ economic status.

This scenario is the slippery slope we are on as we have taken away the reproductive decisions of citizens and given them to the government. There are many families that have children only by the availability of in vitro fertilization, as there are many women who seek abortion for reasons that are personal and painful. The recent U.S. Supreme Court decision to take away a woman’s ability to make these decisions is an affront to all women who desire autonomy for themselves and other women.

I may personally feel that abortion was not an option I would consider, but I strongly feel every woman should have the ability to make that decision for herself in her circumstances.
