DuPage softball notes: Weather another obstacle to overcome in early going
After a 4-0 nonconference loss to Fremd, Glenbard West rattled off consecutive wins against Batavia, Glenbard East (twice) and Addison Trail. In 3 of the 4 wins, West scored 10 or more runs.
Offensively, sophomore Alexa Trybus is hitting .500 (1.494 OPS, .944 slug) with 2 doubles, 2 homers and 5 RBI. Ellie Adduci is hitting .455 with 2 doubles and a home run, while Ainslie Bobroff is hitting .421 with 2 doubles and 7 RBI. May Adduci is at .368 with 2 triples and 9 RBI. “Alexa is off to a great start both offensively and behind the plate for us,” coach Mary McGrane said. “She’s a second-year starter on varsity, has great presence in the box and makes great adjustments at the plate.”
The news has been equally positive on the mound where Ellie Adduci has 31 strikeouts in 17 2/3 innings and Olivia Salerno has fanned 20 in 15 1/3 innings of work.
Addison Trail update: Coach Mark Olson’s crew was off to a 3-2 start with three players hitting north of .400 in Erin Parker (.476), Marisa Lloveras (.456) and Nina Matthews (.422). “Erin Parker is off to a great offensive and defensive start,” Olson said. “She is one of the best outfielders in the area.”
Benet Academy update: Benet opened 1-2 with an 18-1 win over Mother McAuley and competitive losses to Glenbard North (7-4) and Wheaton-Warrenville South (3-1). The Redwings have been victims to 6 rainouts.
Freshman twin sisters Lanie and Sophie Rosner are off to strong starts with Lanie hitting .500 with a double, a triple and 3 RBI and Sophie boasting a home run and a team-best 5 RBI. Continuing the sister theme, Gianna and Angelina Horejs each hit a homer in their first at-bats this season.
Downers Grove South update: The 3-2 Mustangs have struck 8 home runs in their first 5 games. Ella Kardatzke (1B-DP) is hitting .750 with 3 doubles, 3 homers and 12 RBI. Leadoff hitter and shortstop Grace Taylor is hitting .667 with 3 doubles, 2 homers, 6 RBI and 10 runs scored, while Ella Cushing is hitting .467 with 3 homers, 9 RBI and 9 runs scored.
Fenton update: The Bison won three of their first four games with junior catcher Natalia Staszel hitting .625 with an .800 on-base percentage to go with 8 runs scored. She’s also thrown out 2 runners stealing. Freshman pitcher Sophia Hollis has a win and a save, while also hitting a homer to go with 5 RBI. Junior center fielder Elizabeth Delgado is hitting .556, while senior third baseman-shortstop Kayla Valadez is at .429. Staszel and Valadez are tied for the team lead in doubles with three each, while Staszel has 2 triples.
Glenbard East update: Junior Missy Saldana and freshman Lilly Carver have been getting it done from the top of the order for the 3-2 Rams. Saldana is hitting .692 from the leadoff spot, while Carver is hitting .647 batting third.
Glenbard South update: Freshman shortstop Evangeline Dupuis has been a bright spot for coach Julie Fonda’s squad in the early going, hitting .333 in the first 2 games, while getting on base at a .600 clip. South (0-2) lost to Wheaton-South and Wheaton North.
Hinsdale South update: Through 5 games, the Hornets (3-2) have been led by the likes of Noelle Waterman and Isabella Yanez (6 RBI each), Lilly Davy and Kayla Buckels-Meen (7 hits each) and Lauren Bishop (32 strikeouts in 23 innings, 21 runners left on base).
IC Catholic Prep update: The Knights went 5-0 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina at Ripken Experience against teams from New York and Ohio. The wins moved ICCP to 8-0. Analisa Raffaelli is hitting .676 (.711 on-base percentage) with 5 doubles, 2 triples and 24 stolen bases (not a typo). AJ Dwyer has a team-high 3 homers and 16 RBI.
Lake Park update: The Lancers (8-0) tore through the competition in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee at Ripken Experience, outscoring foes from three states by a combined 62-14 in 5 contests. In 8 games, Lake Park is hitting .400 while outscoring opponents 88-26. Leading the way is the trio of Kylie Pytlak (.600, 2 homers, 9 RBI, 14 runs), Alex Kiefer (.600, 1 homer, 9 RBI, 10 runs) and Ava Arenz (.524, 2 homers, 10 RBI, 15 runs scored). Gaetano Calo is 3-0 on the mound with a 1.00 ERA.
Lisle update: Coach Jennifer Zimmerman’s squad was off to a 4-0 start thanks to players such as Mia Mazzolini (.700 batting average, 11 runs scored, 9 walks) and Erin Bradley (.529 batting average, 14 RBI). “Mia and Erin both have had hot bats,” Zimmerman said.
Metea Valley update: Genevieve Gonzales was hitting .722 with a 1.750 OPS and a 1.000 slugging percentage in the team’s first 5 games with 13 hits, 5 doubles, 9 RBI and 6 runs scored. Reese Valha is hitting .550 (1.625 OPS, 1.000 slugging) with 11 hits, 3 doubles, 2 homers, 7 RBI and 11 runs scored for the Mustangs (1-4).
Montini update: The Broncos have 8 games in the books (3-5), playing 4-5 freshmen in the starting lineup each day, coach Amy Bukovsky noted. Freshman Aubry Raffen is hitting .500, leading the team in hits and RBI. Senior Erin Grimsley is hitting .414 and has a team-high 6 doubles. Junior Ari Macias is 3-1 in the circle and has 26 strikeouts, while freshman Cedona Barrett has pitched 17 innings (8 K) and has 9 RBI at the plate. Junior Kat Filkowski has been a consistent spark on both sides of the ball, Bukovsky noted, playing excellent defense, while leading the team in runs scored and steals.
Naperville North update: The Huskies lost a recent doubleheader to Belleville East and defeated O’Fallon. Olivia Hebron leads the team in hits, extra-base hits, RBI and runs, while Sara Rossi leads the Huskies (1-5) in hitting at .467. Gabi Chmiel was the winner against O’Fallon and Maddie Larsen picked up the save. Addison Wade also have been a key contributor. Coach Jerry Kedziora noted 16 players on the team have played in at least 1 game to start the season.
Neuqua Valley update: The Wildcats (0-3) came back from a 5-run deficit in a 7-6 loss to Plainfield East. Through 3 games, Nadia Casanova is hitting. 268 with a .444 on-base percentage. The leadoff hitter leads the team in steals with three. Tegan Spellerberg is hitting .286 and had a key triple in the East game that tied the game. Coach Dani Asquini also lauded Spellerberg’s efforts behind the plate.
Timothy Christian update: The Trojans split a pair of games against Riverside-Brookfield and Fenton (a come-from-behind 5-4 win in the bottom of the seventh).
Chloe Wetterquist leads the Trojans in hitting at .429, while Lauren Kottke is hitting .400 and Sophia Mook is at .333. Kaleigh Younglove has been a workhorse in the circle for the Trojans, throwing both of the team’s games back-to-back prior to spring break.
West Chicago update: The Wildcats opened the season with a 10-0 win over Waubonsie Valley where Jasmyn Trigueros struck out eight in her first pitching outing of the season.
Wheaton Warrenville South update: The Tigers, off to a 4-0 start, have been led by Maddie Pool both in the circle and in the box. To start the week, Pool was 4-0 with a 0.54 ERA with 9 hits allowed in 26 innings to go with 32 strikeouts against 3 walks. She’s also hitting .500 with a homer and 7 RBI. Abby Mease is hitting a robust .692 with 9 hits in 13 at-bats with 8 runs scored, while Brooke Struebing was at .583 with 3 doubles and 4 RBI. Becca Chaney was hitting .625 with 2 extra-base hits and was hit by a pair of pitches (.700 on-base percentage).
York update: The Dukes won 3 games (and a fourth that was counted as a scrimmage) down in Clearwater, Florida to move to 4-2. Avery Kanouse is hitting .450, as is Lilly Burda (4 RBI, 2 stolen bases), while Sara Steinecker is at .444 with 4 stolen bases. Taylor McMillen has struck out 17 and walked only 4 in 21 2/3 innings. She has a .065 ERA and has left 20 opposing runners on base.
