Rev. Scott Mitchell retires after 36 years of leadership at SamaraCare

SamaraCare, a leading nonprofit provider of mental health services in Naperville, announces the retirement of its president and CEO, the Rev. Dr. Scott Mitchell, after an illustrious 36-year tenure with the organization.

Under Mitchell’'s visionary leadership, SamaraCare evolved into a beacon of hope, offering holistic care that integrates the emotional, physical, spiritual, and social components of mental health.

Mitchell was instrumental in expanding the organization’s Mental Health Access Program which has provided over $25 million in reduced cost care to thousands of financially challenged clients in need of counseling and psychiatric care. He will be succeeded by the current executive director, Rev. Dr. Michael Bradburn, who will become president and CEO, effective Jan. 1, 2025.

Mitchell, a clinical psychologist and United Methodist Clergy, joined SamaraCare in 1988 as a psychologist, quickly ascending to the role of clinical director before assuming the helm as interim president and CEO in 1998, a position he would hold permanently from January 1999. Throughout his tenure, Mitchell’s steadfast commitment to SamaraCare’s core values of “Mind, Body, Spirit, and Community” has been instrumental in shaping the organization’s identity and guiding its growth trajectory.

“Scott’s focused leadership during his time as president and CEO has earned him the utmost respect of SamaraCare’s employees, clients, and board members as well as constituents throughout the communities we serve,” Michael Bradburn said. “Scott’s tremendous efforts strengthened SamaraCare’s values-based culture and enriched the lives of so many. Personally, I am extremely grateful for his guidance, support and mentorship.,”

Reflecting on his remarkable journey, Mitchell expressed gratitude for the opportunities and experiences afforded to him during his tenure.

“It’s been a privilege to lead SamaraCare and witness the unwavering dedication of our employees and board members to our mission,” he remarked. “I’m confident that SamaraCare is poised for continued success in the capable hands of Michael Bradburn and our exceptional team.”

As Mitchell prepares to embark on his next chapter, SamaraCare expresses deep appreciation for his invaluable contributions and wishes him all the best in his retirement.

Founded over 53 years ago, and now serving six counties, SamaraCare offers spiritually integrated counseling and psychiatric services to those interested. It is one of the largest accredited mental health organizations in the Chicago area. It pioneered a Mental Health Access Program to provide reduced cost care to under-resourced clients struggling both emotionally and financially.
