‘Pop Culture and Theology’ class to be offered at Wheaton’s Gary UMC
For the next two Sundays, scholar Daniel Somboonsiri will lead the discussion on pop culture and theology at 10 a.m. at Gary United Methodist Church, 224 N. Main St. in Wheaton.
On Sunday, May 12, the focus will be on memes, including using the history of art and theology to examine what memes say about postmodern life. Is life, like today’s memes, increasingly absurd, or can a theology of memes help you navigate the absurdity around you?
On Sunday, May 19, Somboonsiri will present a biblical theology of culture and then provide a theological framework for engaging contemporary culture.
The church offers 9 and 11 a.m. Sunday worship in the sanctuary. The 9 a.m. worship is complete with Kids’ Church and nursery care, plus livestreaming and recorded worship at garychurch.org. The 11 a.m. worship has a more casual feel featuring church musicians. At 10 a.m., you can enjoy a coffee hour called “Special Blend” plus Sunday school for all ages.
With deep roots in the community since 1853, Gary Church has vibrant music, kids, youth and adult ministries, plus opportunities for local, national and global missions. For more information, go to garychurch.org or contact the church office at office@garychurch.org.
