Maine South water polo team member, coach honored after pool rescue

A player and a coach on the Maine South High School water polo team have been publicly lauded for rescuing another team member during an aquatic emergency.

Student-athlete Jakub Kociubinski and assistant coach Ben Reiff were given Superintendent Awards by Maine Township High School District 207 Superintendent Ken Wallace during Monday’s school board meeting.

During an April 10 match at Loyola Academy in Wilmette, Kociubinski and Reiff jumped into a pool after someone noticed a team member on the bottom, according to a District 207 announcement.

They brought the teen, who wasn’t publicly identified, to the surface. Further assistance was given on the pool deck, the district said.
